Playoff rules

1. In order to ensure the stability of the second stage of the KHL championship in the 2021-2022 season, the clubs must not earlier than 10 hours and not later than 8 hours before the start of each game to send the KHL a letter of confirmation according to the approved form of the team's possible participation based on the minimum number of senior team players eligible to participate (13 skaters and two goalkeepers).

Failure by the club to submit the required letter of confirmation in due time, the club's indication in the letter of confirmation of the team's inability to participate in the game, or the submission of a list with fewer players is considered by the League as a failure to appear at the game itself. In these cases, the League applies the sanctions provided by its Disciplinary Regulations, which were amended accordingly, implying the application of forfeited games and fines.

2. If both teams in a playoff series (at any stage) are unable to ensure the minimum quantity of senior team's players (13 skaters and two goalkeepers) to the game, the League recognizes this game cancelled. In this case, the maximum number of possible games of the series is reduced by one.

3. If, taking into account the maximum number of possible games in a playoff series, none of the opposing teams is able to get four wins and the difference in the number of wins between such opposing teams becomes greater than the number of remaining games, the series ends earlier, and the team with the highest number of wins is declared the winner.

4. If, according to the results of the maximum number of possible games in a playoff series, none of the opposing teams gets to four wins, the team with the highest number of wins in this playoff series is declared the winner.

5. If according to the results of the maximum number of possible games in the series the opposing teams have an equal number of victories, then the winner will be declared according to the following principles:

1) the greater number of regulation wins in the series;
2) the highest goals differential in the series;
3) the greater number of goals in the series;
4) the higher seed according to the regular-season standings.

These criteria shall be applied consecutively.

If in the series of 1/4 or 1/2 conference finals all gamess scheduled for a pair of opposing teams are declared cancelled, the winner of the series is not determined, and both teams do not go to the next stage. In this case:

- if three teams advance to the conference semifinals, the team with the higher seeding number automatically advances to the conference finals; the remaining two teams play a playoff series for the conference semifinals;
- if two teams reach the conference semifinals, these teams automatically advance to the conference finals;
- the team-winner of an actually-happening conference semifinals series automatically becomes the winner of the conference final and qualify to the championship final series.

If none of the scheduled games are played in the conference finals, the team with the higher seed number is declared the winner of the conference finals.

7. The rules for determining the winner specified in paragraphs 2-5 above shall apply to the Gagarin Cup Finals.

If none of the scheduled games are played in the Gagarin Cup Finals series, the winner of the KHL Championship shall not be determined.
